WASHINGTON D.C. - Today, Foreign Policy for America announced its strong support for Kamala Harris’ selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Governor Walz has dedicated his life to public service and is deeply committed to addressing the challenges we face both domestically and internationally. Together, he and Kamala Harris are the leaders we need in the White House to protect Americans’ security and the freedoms we hold dear.
As a 24-year veteran of the Army National Guard, Governor Walz knows what it means to serve. During his tenure in Congress, he sat on the Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committees, where he championed support for our service members and their families. He understands that America is stronger when we support our military personnel before, during, and after their service.
Tim Walz knows that America is safer and more secure when we stand with our allies and stand up for democracy. Throughout his time as Governor of Minnesota, Walz supported Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. He was quick to condemn Putin’s invasion and passed bipartisan legislation to end Minnesota’s investments in Russia. As governor, he’s spoken with President Zelenskyy and offered Ukraine his unwavering support – a commitment he will continue as vice president.
Governor Walz recognizes that strong trade relationships abroad benefit the American economy, businesses, and families. That’s why in Congress, Walz supported a robust foreign affairs budget that bolstered American diplomacy and economic development. As a governor, When Donald Trump started a trade war with China that hurt Minnesota’s economy, he took decisive action by engaging with East Asian leaders to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with his state. This bold leadership is precisely what America needs to compete in the global economy.
Governor Walz sees clearly that climate change is an existential threat to our country. That’s why as governor, he’s taken concrete steps to protect the security and livelihoods of American families by championing a greener future. He signed a bill setting ambitious climate goals for Minnesota, launched green job-training initiatives, and enacted permitting reform to speed up his state’s renewable energy projects.
Governor Walz is dedicated to protecting fundamental freedoms. As a congressman, he supported efforts to address China’s human rights abuses. He worked to strengthen reproductive freedom and maternal health at home and abroad. As a governor, he signed the Democracy for the People Act into law, strengthening Minnesota’s elections by protecting voting rights and preventing foreign interference.
